technician and these are our amazing teachers whom many of you know already and some of you will get to know soon all right so now that we've reviewed who's here to um support you in learning and guiding and anything you need to ensure that you get a high quality education uh we're going to go over some of the um Virtual Academy expectations for our leadership and public uh service school so these are the expectations that you saw on that Master agreement also known as the MMA and a lot of you students signed it and then your parents also signed it um so the master agreement is like a contract it goes over in detail all the items that the students are uh committing to completing and the rules that they're going to be following um as they are enrolled in a Virtual Academy uh so the number 1 thing here and these are just some of the things that are in the contract called the master agreement right um the first thing is schooly is your platform to access your coursework your assignments your Zoom and also grades those are uh all accessible through schooly the next thing I want to review with you all is that um you attend class daily and the way you do that is you log on to zoom right you have a zoom meetings daily with your teachers and um your teachers post their schedules and um we also have the schedule in our website in case you are um wondering where else you can access that information now it is strongly recommended for you to come to class and your Zoom meetings with your teachers they are there to support you to teach you and uh make sure that you are being provided with a strong educational experience and that you're prepared to in 1 day after you graduate because we're at TK 12 school right from our high school program that you are uh prepared with the skills to be a responsible and hopefully leader Community member within your immediate community and hopefully the world right um so it is really important for you to come daily to class and submit your assignments so that you could acquire all those skills um you are also required to do synchronous um which is what I was describing there right you are synchronous when you're meeting with your teachers in the morning class starts at 8:30 and it ends at 12 but school's not over because what happened happens after your lunch break from 12 to 12:30 you come back log on to schoology and you start submitting your assignments and completing and showing your teacher that you understood the lessons that your teacher taught that day and things that your teacher modeled and helped you and supported you with so make sure you understand the difference between synchronous and asynchronous they happen every day that's how you get part a patient credit attendance credit and your grades and we're also encouraging you just like many of you are to have your cameras on we want to get to know who is Kobe who is Jasmine who is uh let's see who else Haven we if we see your faces if makes us feel like we're uh present and we are also part of the class community that you are attending and school Community daily assignments are posted by your teachers and there's something that we call AOA or a record of assignment which includes 2 weeks of assignments that your teacher reviews with you and that you the student submits for grades and attendance credit for example you can come to zoom every day but what if you you do not turn in your assignments on Schoology guess what your attendance is not going to be good because you have to also not just attend Zoom you have to submit your assignments okay assignment and activities should be completed by the due date the record of assignment and your teacher has those due dates and uh any late and missing assignments will result in student not receiving attendance credit and your grades not being what they should be alright so make sure you remember that your teachers hold record of assignments meetings after lunchtime and during that time your teacher talks to you the student and if your parents are there also attending those meetings teachers have conversations about how you're doing all right so please also lastly there at the bottom students at our Virtual Academy school are expected to make satisfactory progress that means that you're showing that you're learning and you're not falling behind right and that's why you have to submit your assignments so that we can monitor and eventually that's going to determine your grades that you uh earn and your attendance passing grades and good attendance is the way to go now let's take a look at this uh short video that kind of goes over some of the zoom hiccups and expectations first of all what you want to fish in the window or life Mr L you're not sharing your screen looked directly is it working 1 second sorry guys I'm gonna start that video again I just realized that um we have to reshare our screen can you guys see it yes all right let's go ahead and start that video and here we go screen so that your entire face feels a right way to join an online classroom and then there's the wrong way take a look first you want to sit facing a window or light next you want to press mute then look directly into the camera and finally lean into the screen so that your entire face fills the frame it seems easy and it is just avoid being 1 of these students Harry Houdini the 1 who hides and tries to disappear behind his hood ah the Steph Curry the student who wants to interact but he's so far away from the screen you can barely see him he's 10 ft behind the 3-point line and he has trouble making his point or you've got that and the I woke up like this the student know it through your lesson this thing is a cry where only certain body parts of the v i mean the student can be seen and then the Silence of the Lamb the student who Rambles on and on on and on but it's clearly on mute but has no idea a little bit too literally and then we have the Halo the student who sits with the light right behind them casting a hue of bright light around them it's very annoying and then we have the Nomad the student who not sit still and roams around the house throughout the entire lesson I can't find my baby and then you got the groundhog the 1 whose head you can barely see and then we have the Headless Horseman whose angle is quite unfortunate for obvious reasons and then we have Galileo the student who is constantly looking around and daydreaming and clearly not paying attention to anything you're saying the immutable Madness there is so what's going on in this child's house and for some reason he doesn't seem to be able to keep himself on you and then you have a Decepticon the student who acts is paying attention but he's really not he's deceiving you he's doing everything but paying attention and all the self-obsessed students only interested in using classes screen time to print to Adorn themselves oh I'm having so much fun and finally we have the rest Zoomer this is the student who's on zoom and forgets to press mute when he goes to the restroom stop it he needs some milk so students please heed my advice and avoid any of those behaviors I will thank you your teachers thank you and your classmates online will appreciate it as well did you clean your room I got to go dude I can do this 1 um so Zoom expectations um it's to be on time be respectful mute when you're not speaking uh raise your hand to speak there is a little icon there most of you know it find a quiet appropriate workspace we understand some of you it's a challenge to do that maybe you have other people in the house or maybe your spaces in the kitchen or something else you know see if you could find an angle where there's no 1 walking behind you and it's quiet most of you or a lot of you are what we've seen is you use your your um bedroom and it it tends to be a quiet space so whatever is a ate whatever is uh the most appropriate workspace for you um at your home please go ahead and find that um use your name when logging into Zoom so again just your um make sure that you don't put in any nicknames when you're logging in and you should be logging in using your LAUSD account um use the chat feature uh when your teacher gives you permission to do so um there are reactions there that you can use and then then demonstrate uh Phoenix Pride those of you that are new to our uh Academy um we are Phoenix leaders that is uh and so we try to demonstrate FedEx Pride show integrity and then would your family be proud of the choices that you are making so I always kind of ask yourself that question okay um go ahead next slide please and here are some Zoom Norms or dorms as we call them and again some of these uh you we talked about please be on time I'll be open to the ideas of others and please share your own um this platform allows us uh allows for you to be at home uh someplace other than School and so this is still a classroom you have to remember that this is still a classroom uh be open to the idea that you're sharing you are sharing ideas um we encourage you to please keep your camera on during your on-time uh learning um main available to participate in conversations there's going to be breakout rooms there's going to be opportunities for you to discuss both with the teacher with the class and in small groups um and it's an interactive session um feel free to use the raise hand tool to share your ideas or again keep your audio muted when you're participating in a discussion use the chat to respond and comment as needed and please keep your comments collegial um professional okay um and we're all in this together so again all of us decided all of you decided that you are going to be part of a Virtual Academy just kind of keep that in mind you made a choice to be here with us so we're glad you're here but again just keep that in mind that this is the classroom you opted to be here um instead of a School site and so this this is our classroom this is our classroom environment okay and Norms of collaboration uh pausing so when you're talking you know you have to pause every so often just to make sure that people are understanding or you kind of read the room read the faces that are there the other people on the screen are they nodding um you know just uh wait for that wait for that information to soak in uh presume positive intention that means never assume that anything said as a personal attack you know sometimes some things are misconstrued or you maybe you misunderstood it or maybe it wasn't said well but don't assume that the other person or the persons that are speaking mean anything negative assume that they're being positive um paraphrasing um so say things in a different way um providing data okay to back up your claim putting ideas on the table so if we're looking for solutions for something or a possible answer to a question but in an idea and don't be afraid that it may be wrong we're here to learn and we're here to learn from each other and even when we make mistakes it's uh we're we're learning from that okay so again um put your ideas even if you're not sure put your idea out on the table again we can learn from others it's not just the teachers that we're learning from we're learning from each other um posing questions so ask questions and then paying attention to yourself and to others next slide okay someone else going to do this full schedule today oh you're on I can go ahead and cover that Mr Lopez and hopefully uh I see people most uh students and staff practicing some of those Zoom Norms let me look through the screen here the core thank you for having your screen on your video on on let's see who else I see Karen cause thank you Karen I could see you and Nico Hernandez shout out to you too for following the norms and szohr and all of those rules that we just went over uh so now we want to go over your schedule right for Virtual Academy we mentioned that school starts at 8:30 with you joining your Zoom teacher classrooms you meet with your teachers so that they teach and they go over assignments and they make sure that you're learning bottom line right and then for our secondary students because remember remember we're a TK through 12th grade campus we have elementary middle school and high school students so for the middle school and high school students they don't stay in 1 class like our elementary kids from TK to 5 tk25 uh students you stay with your teacher 1 teacher all day long right until 12 you go to lunch and then you work a synchronously to complete your work and practice what you learned for the day secondary students they meet with more than 1 teacher throughout the day so we say that secondary students rotate to content specific classes and different teachers in the afternoon because remember school starts at 8:30 and what does what time does school end 3:00 you agreed to be part of this Virtual Academy school and this is the Virtual Academy school schedule in the afternoon after your lunch break you take your lunch break from 12 to 12:30 then from 12:30 to 3 you work on your record of assignments that are listed where in schoology and you complete showing effort so that your teacher uh can grade them and ensure that you are learning completing assignments equal good attendance reminders they are in student teachers sorry parent and students and your teacher meet every week during your record of assignments or row a meetings once a week your teachers are putting together a schedule for you and they're going to let you know when you're going to get 1-on-1 time to meet with your teacher so that they talk to you and have a conversation about how you're doing are you um completing the assignments and also celebrating for those of you that are doing amazing in your class right your parents are also um invited to attend those record of assignment meetings teachers are available for office hours meaning if you need support you communicate with your teacher and they can schedule a time to meet with you in the afternoon as well now we also have reuting for our LAUSD students and we're going to have a flyer that we're going to share with you about how that works and guess what it's available 24 hours a day 7 days a week including Saturdays and Sundays and this is free to all LAUSD students all right so that's the school schedule which I'm sure all of you already know because you've been in class what day school is this we started Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday today's the fourth day now here's an example of the elementary daily schedule your elementary teachers might have and hopefully they already reviewed it with you right and they should have reviewed it with you during your Zoom class sessions that we've had so far so notice that the school starts what time everyone 8:30 for students teachers start 8 they're getting ready preparing making sure their technology is working and sometimes even meeting with you or other staff members before they open their classrooms at 8:30 and then they teach they give you a little break in between which we call it recess break rate and then um you end class at 12 on Zoom then you take your lunch and then continue the afternoon working asynchronously now remember we're a tk12 class or school so we have here an example of what the schedule looks like for a middle school and high school student we have 6 classes write 6 we call that 6 periods for our middle school and high school students and um we have a special schedule for them that on Blue days we call them blue days they go to Home Room first period second period and then third period then we have something that we call the white days the difference here is that they go to Home Room same time and then and they go to their additional classes or periods so on white days they go to period 4 period 5 and period 6 then just like Elementary student schedules they continue working right asynchronously so here's an example of how you can organize your time in the afternoon because this is an independent studies program in the master agreement you and your parent agreed that you would be a responsible students that can manage and organize your assignment schedule so when you're doing a synchronous time for middle school and high school students on those blue Daze work on your period 1 2 and 3 because those are the classes that you attended on the blue days right and then on the other days that we called the white days to work on your assignments for periods 4 5 and 6 that way you don't overwhelm yourself right this is just 1 way you can organize yourself now you heard me talk about attendance and daily participation they are 2 big items that are important for you to be successful in our Virtual Academy school um there's a difference attendance and daily participation so let's talk about attendance how do you earn attendance in our Virtual Academy school you earn by completing assignments during the AA to week period so every 2 weeks your teacher gives you access to your assignments that you have to complete in those 2 weeks then your teacher reviews your assignments and grades them or we call it evaluates them you need to submit your assignments in order to get attendance credit now you also earn um participation by attending daily Zoom classroom sessions okay but the most important part for your attendance is to complete assignments and submit them on schooly all right so over here it says 100 of work completed if you turn it off for your assignments during that row of cycle you're going to get 100 or perfect attendance so boys and girls just like all other schools hello USD attendance matters complete those assignments on your Roa schedule and make sure that you turn them in on time don't be late turn them in on time to receive credit for attendance and positive rates now you heard me say and call some days blue days and some days white dates for Middle School and High School so this is the calendar that your teacher will share with you and help you organize your days and understand what periods or classes you go to so for example what day is it today today is Thursday August 15th I'm going to go to my calendar here here's August here's Thursday and here's 15 what color is that too so that tells me that's a blue day so I go to the key here and on Blue days you go to Home Room period 1 period 2 and period 3 so today when our assembly ends what period are you going to go to it's a blue Day show me with your finger what period are you going to go to middle school and high school students if you look at the screen there's a big hint let's see so what period are you going to for those of you that put period 1 a finger for number 1 you are correct and in addition to that your teachers are going to share this presentation with you eventually and provide you with these um resources some of your teachers might have already provide you with this resource this is the uh important dates calendar that they're important you know why boys and girls cuz not only do they include um number of days you are in school but it also includes the number of days that you have a break the holidays where schools are closed and you don't have to come to school so that's a calendar that you and your parents should review to plan accordingly School environment just like in the video um you need to find a place to work quietly and that you are able to concentrate with little to no noise or distractions so that you can focus with your teacher and your classmates now make sure that you jot down and you discuss those most important dates with your parents also on schoology um it requires you to um check daily login and um make sure that you monitor that you complete your assignments um take notes in uh middle school and high school and some upper grade elementary schools um students are learning about Cornell notes and your teachers are going to teach and go over how to take good notes make time to study right you have uh from 12:30 to 3 to practice and then um for those of you that need a little extra practice um you can continue practicing after 3:00 right um those of us that show a lot of effort get ahead right so um talk to your parents about that schedule and how you're going to um uh schedule your afternoons 1 1 school is over and then set alarms a lot of you might have cell phones set alarms right to make sure that you are on time and um that you're going in the right place especially for a middle school and high school students with your different periods that you rotate now um we're a Virtual Academy school and right now we're all using a device technology is huge it's like the heart of it all right you have to have a working device it has to be an ausd device why because there are activities and assignments and other things that you're going to need to do that's um protected uh websites so it has to be an LAUSD device um especially when you are doing assessments and you need to make sure that you have an LAUSD device for those activities if you need support or assistance here is a um website so if you have a cell phone take a snapshot of it I see Avery Conway I saw you taking a picture of that very good or I saw somebody that's exactly what we want to do right and don't worry we're going to post this presentation on our website so that you have access to it we're going to give your teachers a copy of it and eventually we're going to also going to meet with your parents during back to school night and a couple of days a couple weeks and they're going to get all this information again so the more we share the more we um uh support you our students which is our main goal and and and um uh responsibility as your uh support staff and teachers right here you have a phone number they're open from 7:30 to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday except those holidays if you're off they are off and then for technical support there's also that additional phone there okay and again if you didn't get it don't worry we're going to share it um again with you now what if you can't get Support over the phone you try everything that the person is helping you over the phone and you're like oh my God uh can I go somewhere to get support yes here is an informational um uh flyer where it shows the different um areas you can go 2 for support including the website that QR code and then that little map for when you go over this with your parents those are the different locations that you can take your technology and get support in person now you've heard me mention the um tutoring right it's free tutoring not a lot of things are free in the world boys and girls this is free right here tutoring extra help um if you log onto your Schoology if you look to your left and then scroll down you're going to see a little icon there with tutor.com you can access is that 7 days a week 24 hours a day including Saturdays and Sundays now not only um are we here to help you with uh uh your education and ensuring that you are acquiring and learning the skills and um having fun with your teachers why not right we have fun when we learn but we also are here to help ensure that you are well so here is a resource that um if your parents or if you're an older student in middle school and high school you need um support uh with mental health please um take a picture of this we are here to support you our leusd has programs that are here to ensure that you are safe and well so that you can learn now being a virtual uh Academy school um technology and social media is huge in order to make sure that we're communicating and advertising and promoting our school right so this is our um little slide that has all of our social media information accounts we have a website yes we do boys and girls um and shout out to some of our teachers and staff that helped us build this website um we continue to grow and learn and try to make make it more efficient for you students and parents we also have Facebook yes believe it or not um we have a Facebook account so there it is Twitter and Instagram we are growing and getting better day day year by year and um if you have an idea share it with your teachers and share it with your support staff and you never know we may bring that idea to fruition and give you credit because after all we are leadership and public service Virtual Academy our goal is to build and find and cultivate the leader within you so boys and girls it is 917 and um as soon as we end the assembly remember today's a blue day for those of you that are in middle school and high school you're going to go to period number 1 course number 1 you're going to log onto your schoology account go to your period number 1 and in their your teacher has already placed the zoom link for the next class that you are to Port 2 and make sure that you are um if you're in elementary you go to your regular Elementary School teacher right you log onto your schooly and click on your Elementary School uh course and your Zoom information for your teacher should be there and I'm going to go ahead and hand it off to the next um presenter to close our assembly so thank you um students families for joining us teachers for all your support and wonderful activities you have planned for our students and let's go ahead and say hip hip hooray to a wonderful school year so let's go ahead and unmute everyone and uh let's let's try to do that um can we unmute everyone team can you support me with that Cosmic I have to set to say hip hip right right they're putting in the chat some people are putting in the chat which is wonderful the boys and girls make sure that you go to your um teacher Elementary of to your classroom teacher and secondary students please go ahead and go to your first period oh wow that is amazing it is we were able to hear a lot of your voices um and uh here's to an amazing school year and um we'll be seeing
