of all over and talk about what or what is a career you're all going to learn about five different careers today still its first learning some terminology a career is a job or profession that a person is it to do for a long time and may require special training or education some Korean vocabulary today that you're going to hear me not be may not be some Concepts you're familiar with Siri go over a few of them today we do have a great span of K through 12 so this is going to be helpful for all of us qualifications you make your this term today qualifications are like badges that show you're ready for a job include things like skills you've learned School braids and experiences that make you good at what you want to do certifications certifications are special words you can learn to prove you're really good at they're like getting a gold star for doing a great job at school or in a game job expectations job expectations are like a list of things you need to do when you have a job they tell you what you're supposed to do like homework March 4th at home but for work it's important to know what's expected of you so you can do your best experience experience is like a super cat power you gain by doing things it's what when you try something new like playing a sport or learning to cook the more you do it the better you get when it comes to jobs experience me the things you've learned and done that can help you do a job better if you your parents with chores at home or volunteered at a community event that's all experienced unless we salary salary something that we're all going to hear about a throttle lives it is essentially the money you earn for a job you do just like you might get an allowance for doing chores at home people get paid for the work they do at their jobs the amount of money you make is called your salary some jobs pay more money than others depending on things like how much education you need how much experience do you have and what kind of work you do so salary is like the reward you get for working hard and doing a good job pictures of short video about students just like yourself this what are career is why do people go to work make money is it important wow love love love what do you want to be when you grow up of course I like to be about teachers gymnast but I don't think I can come I don't even know how to do a Goods that were so either law or interior design I don't know a skater singer horse rider robot owner on Oprah and Ellen be an anesthesiologist designer and I want to be a mommy anesthesiologist I can hardly even pronounce that one I just really like I really like this kind of doctors and they make good money and they also helped lots of people things like that are a family really need games like if we need like some pineapple or something not really working or just having fun give to someone who doesn't like their job 2 the job but maybe are you looking forward to having a career when you grow up then and have a career like it's going to everything is going to be so slow you don't have time to play with your friends you won't have time to get ice cream go out hang out with your family is going to be busy busy busy busy busy call Ryder but it's the new phone that you have some of what a career is this video is all about motivation so much I think about some of the things that you want to do in the future perhaps your career might perhaps you already have your dream job in mine so this video is here to Kenny let you focus on your goals and even on the days you don't have motivation these today is the strategy will help you stay on track you always aspired to be a professional artist at last maybe, reality and you're creating a portfolio to submit to art programs but as the application deadline looms you suddenly find yourself unmotivated and avoiding the canvas all together why does motivation seems so fickle and what even is it in the first place psychologists Define motivation as the desire or impetus to initiate and maintain a particular behavior in other words it's the energy that drive you to do something and knowing the source of that drive is particularly important when it comes to understanding how play neck-deep motivational forces generally fall into two broad categories intrinsic and extrinsic and intrinsic motivation is involved when you experience an activity as an ended take a hobby like playing video games The Experience largely explains the desire to do it performing tasks that feel right in the moment or that you find a meaningful interesting or satisfying are driven by entrance motivation trinsic motivation on the other hand refers to pursuing a task as a means to an end if you would consider going to the dentist and enjoyable activity your often motivated by the outcome of Living Clean healthy teeth other examples of extrinsic motivation include completing a task to receive some sort of the ward Brothers praise power or money notably these rewards tend to come later like receiving a bonus end of a quarter or winning a competition after months of training getting paid may seem appealing their effectiveness can be surprisingly short-lived treatment for the 2017 study found that those you were highly focused on the outcomes of their New Year's resolution or driven by extrinsic motivation worth the most likely to stick to them what did predict persistence however was how much a person enjoy pursuing their goals in other words you're more likely to maintain an exercise routine is to take class if you enjoy rather than just those that build your biceps years of psychology research has shown that levels of intrinsic motivation for school a job or an exercise class are more likely to keep you engaged in the long run day-to-day actions do are rare either exclusively intrinsically or candidly motivated for a History exam for example can be intrinsically motivated if you're curious about the culture of ancient Egypt but extrinsic motivators may also be at play as you aim to get a good grade or fuel pressure from family members to do well in school but having multiple motivators isn't always better one study of military cadets found at those who were driven both by intrinsic motivators like cell Improvement and extrinsic motivators like the outcome of getting a good job or overall less motivated than Cadets driven by Just One of These factors as a result these Cadets performed worse are less likely to graduate psychologist call this phenomenon the overjustification effect the idea that additional extrinsic motivators can actually muddy the water is when you already have the intrinsic Drive you something but this is only a problem if you already find a task motivating when you're faced with an activity you find tedious or uninteresting adding extrinsic rewards can be beneficial in this way extrinsic motivators provide sufficient justification while you may never enjoy doing the laundry it may feel less daunting if you get praise from a loved one or even promise yourself that you watch your favorite TV show when you're done folding motivation is complicated and sometimes no matter how passionate you are about a goal or hobby finding the motivation that actually do it can be difficult but there are things you can do to increase your drive even when it feels impossible focus on building intrinsic motivation by making the task more fun in the moment asking a friend to join you or simply putting on your favorite can give you the Boost to get started and bequeath your goals for the Long Haul another great tool is talking all right didn't think about that think about the things that keep you motivated cuz guess what not always be motivated to reach her goal but I hope two days. It does inspire you to stay on track on some of those goes like you do want a cheap so later on and let you will be doing the one thing that you want to do that's right usually all want to train shops open you keep staying on your goal stay on track and stay motivated alright so let's explore some different careers these are our speakers for today we are going to be doing some switching rights or our first speak or has it emergency so he'll be joining us a little later after all he is a firefighter so emergency is always our priority one moment while I well we welcome our guest speaker at first before we even jump into our first guest speaker we want to know a little bit about her field as a as a lawyer right so this short just going to kind of give us an idea what a lawyer is she's a public defender so lawyer comes in all series of different rashes there different types of Lord and today we do have two attorneys presented but they're both have very different rules lawyers advised individuals businesses and government agencies on legal issues and disputes and represent them in court and legal transactions also called attorneys lawyers inform their clients about their legal rights applications and helped steer them through the complexities of the law they also advocate for their clients in court by presenting evidence and making legal arguments lawyers conduct research and prepare documents such as lawsuits wills and contracts they also oversee the work of paralegals and legal secretaries lawyers work for law firms governments and corporations and government prosecutors are the attorneys who filed charges against those accused of violating the law while public Irish represent individuals who cannot afford to pay an attorney lawyers who work in law firms often start his associates and Pay Advance to partnership or part owner in their firm those who do not make partner after several years may be forced to leave a practice known as up or out lawyers May specialize in a subject area such as environmental law tax intellectual property or family law most lawyers work in offices and travel to visit clients or represent their clients in court the generally keep full-time hours and overtime is coming attorneys May face heavy pressure at times for example during trials or when trying to meet deadlines it usually takes three years of law school after college to become a lawyer all states require lawyers to pass licensing test called bar exam to practice law prior felony convictions May disqualify candidates from practicing law all right so we have her next our first Speaker of the day but she's a public defender her name is Katherine. Jackson take it away Public Defense can see a public defender I like this analogy is like a brave knight who helps people who can't afford a lawyer so they make sure everyone gets a fair trial just like in a story book the brave knight that's cool public defenders listen to their clients and stand up for them in court even if they can't pay for the lawyer so that way everyone gets fairness in the courtroom not just the red so they fight to make sure everyone's rights are checked it and it nobody is treated unfairly so if someone is in trouble and needs a hero to help them a public defender is there to defend them and make sure they are treated fairly by the legal system and we are super lucky we Katherine P Lucito Esquire public defender here she was able to make it on short notice with Tanner getting called out in a minute so if she grew up in Northern California she now does law in Washington but might be coming back to California at some point and she went to Gonzaga University School of Law is very very impressive University you guys and yeah I'll give the floor to her leg introduce yourself and thank you so much for being here Catherine of course I'm very happy to be here so as they said my name is Katherine and I am a public defender so just kind of like a basic over here I think that V did a really good job of explaining this but the most important thing is like who needs a public defender and most people do most people who commit crime typically do so because their circumstances of Life have led them there most people aren't huge criminals we sometimes hear about in the news who are harming lots of people on purpose a lot of the time it's somebody who's in a really hard spot in their life who made a bad decision or a mistake or you know some spiral out of control on that can happen really quickly pretty much anybody most of the people who are going through our legal system in the United States need a public defender there's a few reasons for that one of them is what I just said. sometimes people's life circumstances are the reason they committed the crime or are being accused of the crime and so it's really important as Jackson just said that not just the rich have access to Illegal defense that's when you know the laws that are cut he was found it on when we signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution because those things weren't really fair and England was a man really frustrated people when they started this country so much money do lawyers I'm sure if you all hurt really really expensive and there's good reason it's really hard to be a liar we do a lot of work it takes a lot of school to do it it is really hard and very stressful you have a lot of weight on your shoulders all the time and you're always dealing with something very important to somebody maybe their freedom like I deal with are their life or their money or their children or their what their marriage there's lots of things that matter to people and so that's my lawyer's can sometimes get really expensive but that doesn't mean the people who can't afford a lawyer should it have I think it's really important that we have public defenders now public defenders sometimes don't get all of the respect in the community that I think we deserve and maybe I'm a little bit biased but like I said most people need this but a lot of people don't see us as real lawyers because we choose to do our service for free now those things aren't important to me and I think that's really why I became a lawyer and I also what kind of Circle back to orient you guys how I got here I actually went to high school with Jackson and we grew up together and after high school I went to Community College not the Community College I started taking criminal justice classes but it seems interesting and I found that I really really liked it they really wasn't a fan of how we did it in this country and so it was hard for me to decide what do I want to do I'm really interested in this field and I'd like to continue working in it but I don't want to do something that I feel is harmful to it a huge number of people so that's when I decided I wanted to be a lawyer and I wanted to be a defense lawyer so I had that mindframes pretty much from the time I was at a community college when I left the Community College I went to Sonoma State University there I majored in criminology and after I left there I made it up to Gonzaga and I've lived in Washington since then now I practice federal law after law school and then now I'm passing passing state law in Tennessee pretty simple distinction but every States every city every County and the federal government they all have different laws now the federal government kind of sets the bear men they say you have this is what everybody has to be doing and states and counties counties and cities can all take it a little bit further and see but you should be doing this and so it's important to have somebody who liked knows what to do when each of those jurisdiction and I in a video dimension on this and it's important to me that has a specialty all lawyers don't know all laws that's impossible there laws govern everything that we do in this country from taxes City our environment keeping people out of jail marriages together everything we do have a lot related to it so I don't know all those laws and I think that's a really important lesson to take over on life and it's something I think it's kind of misconstrued people your age is you know everybody has to know everything and you need to memorize everything all the time you don't and that's not how it happens in the real world you just need to know how to be able to find the answer that's what's important it's nowhere to look how to start looking for that so you can get the answer so I specialize in criminal defense with in criminal defense as a public defender sometimes we do other areas of law so right now for example I'm doing men Health defense still a public defender I still represent all of my clients for free but my clients typically haven't committed a crime right now but somebody whether it be family or a caregiver or law enforcement somebody but this person really really needs psychiatric help and they need to go to a hospital even though they don't want to and stay there to get that help that sounds like a good thing and it is generally a pretty good thing but because the government is the one saying you have to be here you get certain rights and I'm one of those rights as somebody who knows what they're doing to say hey what do you want to do I will advocate for that and that's the biggest thing about being a lawyer my job not arguing my daughter that job is not about proving someone be wrong my job is not listening to my client in finding out what they want to do telling them what their options are and making sure that they know what they can do and then doing what they even if I don't agree with the decision I can give him as much advice if I want but I cannot make decisions for people and that's really important and I think it's really important because when somebody is going through our legal system they tend to not have a lot of it and that means that they don't really get to make their own decisions they don't get a lot of say and things that are going on in their life they don't get to pick the food they eat they don't get to pick where they go or when they're allowed to leave I don't care what's happening to them but the most they can do is to handle it and so my job is to tell them what's going on and explain Concepts to somebody who may not have an education or maybe in the middle of a psychotic break or maybe isn't even from this country and doesn't speak this way I'd explain these Concepts that you know we might know Americans are people who are educated or or any of these things and break it down and so it's digestible cuz it's not fair for somebody to go through such a major process with no idea what is going on around them because it does it really impacts a person's life so those are my specialty areas of practice criminal mostly and then my law degree in itself has a specialty focus and that is civil and human rights so in law school and I three years of law school I picked my classes to get extra degree on top of my law degree so I took things like Civil Right andreasen the law which explored how we've handled race in the United States you know from the Civil War to now I'm in how that impacted the way we make love we've made love now that's impacted a lot of people in our country I took things like immigration law you know things that are about battering somebody's life somebody was in a really hard spot and helping our life it a little bit better I might have Prejudice towards corporations in corporate law and stuff there about profit I'm not about profit about people so the law of the video also mentioned that lawyers work full time they tend to in a lot of time we work over full time work overtime and that is very true but I think there's a big change and lawyers kind of my age and younger that we work life balance is really important and I think that's when you guys can keep in mind like your whole life it is really important to work hard and it's cheap things but you also need to remember to take care of yourself take care of your family and take care of your Social relationships cuz those things matter they affect your happiness may affect everything if you're not happy if you're having a good life and I'll be doing good work so there's no point working yourself to death you got to make sure you're balancing these things so even though I work full time I try to limit myself to those 40 hours a week much as possible but there are circumstances where I'm going to time crunch or I have a deadline or something really big is happening tomorrow like going to trial is going to trial is a lot of work you kind of have to think ahead and what could they happen in this trial what every possible outcome you need to be prepared for it cuz if you're not a lot harder to think on your toes specially not really stressful situation like that in front of a judge or jury everybody staring at you and I have to question you love me no idea what the answer is you got to come up with something so it's better to be prepared and come up with something good that's not going to ruin your clients life so where can I balance is really important to keep in my but you have to be reasonable I understand that I chose a profession that sometimes requires more than that one thing at a time circling back to the video I think it's just a good kind of starting point for you guys did discuss bar and now I explain you guys I went to Community College and State University then law school and after law school even though I had all this education and I had some experience in law at this point I could have to start doing it I needed to get my license and so I had to take the bar exam the bar exam they only do it twice a year in February and they do it in July and a lot of people spend months studying or 3 hours a week to try to learn as many all that you can to pass this test and luckily I did pass the test and I was able to start practicing but it mentioned that there's other things that come along with it because there's there's the bar exam with a test your knowledge of the law but there's also an ethics portion of the bar called the mpre which is the Multistate professional responsibility exam and that's where they test our knowledge of the ethical rules allow lawyer has to follow because there are lots of rules that we have to follow or we could lose our license and we can potentially get in trouble and go to jail too if we're violating these rules and the last thing at the bar exam is checking for his character in it and that is where it mention that sometimes people with felonies might not be able to become a lawyer it's because there unable to pass the character and fitness test now it's not impossible my best friend from law school went to prison before he even went to college he changed his life got his free decided to go to law school and while it was much harder for him to pass character and fitness than it was for me cuz I have no prior convictions I kind of skated through he had to prove that he isn't a criminal anymore and he chose to go to law school to better his life so it is still possible to have a history or past that might not be the best and be a lawyer and I see it it's really important that I think lawyers are recognizing this because we ask so much especially like in my area of Law and criminal law that we are so much of people to be better you know you're a bad person you're a criminal you need to be a better person within a lot of the times when people make these real effort to be a better person all we can see it yeah but you were criminal before so you're probably be a criminal again and that's really not fair how can we expect change but not respect to change so I think it's really important that lawyers are recognizing that sort of change no Jackson mental me of fairness and not really, we call that Justice and it's the justice system that we all work between and it is really about fairness cuz you have to be balancing the rights for example in front of the person who is harmed the person who did the Army because those people both have rights protected by the government and he know we need to tell Brittany to the Army was not okay we can't ruin their life for it they have to have a chance to be better so really what it comes to for my job is storytelling my biggest part of the job is you know on top of all the legal stuff of course this listen to my clients I want them to tell me what was your childhood like what were your parents like what what was high school like did you graduate you know have you ever used drugs before what how is that been for you I want to know every detail about their life because a lot of things that they think may not matter really do and it's really important for a judge to hear those things when they're imposing a sentence because you know for example of somebody committed a drug offense but they did it because they have a really bad addiction themselves that they have had trouble getting for that matters because maybe that person doesn't need to be in prison but they need to be in some sort of treatment and a judge has the power to do those things so it's really important for me to listen to my clients hear their story and relay that story to everybody advocating for what that person wants a lot of people are willing to own up to what they've done and take accountability for their actions they just want to minimize the harm in in some people want to fight entirely that is entirely their right in the Constitution protects those right so those are kind of like the big overseeing peed pieces of this job I love the job it is really hard it's very Nicole cuz like I said you're always dealing with somebody's worst day nobody's happy about the crimes they've committed usually nobody's happy about having a psychotic break those things are really hard and they damaged relationships and live in if I can stop in not judge them hear them out and see how I can help make that a little bit easier for them to manage and move on from I'm happy to do so now I think I'm kind of close to the end of my time is there any questions that anybody might have or anyting you guys want me to explain or talk about any further all right I'll give kids a minute. I think you guys cannot post questions in the chat and then we'll be able to see it as a poster panelist so if we might need some good questions all the I'll pass them along to you I had one question look like it looks like there's a couple better kind of similar or better coming from I want to know what the pay is like that's important because it's not cheap to go to law school cuz I'm like me my parents are not even graduate college I have a first-generation college only when my family has graduated college me only person is gone to graduate school graduate school is not cheap it is made by the ridge for the rich it is made for lawyers whose kids want to go to law school law schools that have huge advantages so it's really important that after we paid for all this really important education you'll just really hard really important work that we're getting paid fairly so it depends on what kind of lawyer practicing now by the public defender get paid a lower salary than other lawyers me because I'm getting paid by the government not my client I'm not making it really high rates to only help rich people and let the government pay my salary and I'll have anybody for any cost matter what they need so my salary is about $100,000 and I've only been practicing for a few years so that's kind of like an intro salary good not as much anymore because you know he's not so great at the whole different thing but I mean I had a A co-worker I met at my job who came from practicing they call it Big law and now there's a few big law firms in the country and those are they kind of contract. They had hundreds of lawyers from the email contact out the big big corporations to do their legal service so they charge insane amounts of money he told me that they build $852 an hour for their clients so there's that was for the whole firm but their firm was charging him with 900 an hour to help people and we charge people in 6 minute increments because that is one tenth of an hour so every 6 minutes you're getting billed just hard because a lot of people are paid by the hour 1 hour phone calls you can charge your phone calls or emails or questions motions or writing or Court time there's everything I need and you're doing for a case you can charge for when your salary usually a little lower but there's one more job protection I meant as more job consistency so I need a really can range it's not bad pay at all it ranges from like good stuff fantastic but it's like I said depends on what kind of while you're practicing where you're practicing law and how long been practicing law I was in the other other times you thought you couldn't do it absolutely oh my gosh there's so many times it's really hard and they're like really intimidating sometimes especially for me as a new lawyer I started practicing federal law so my clients are all kind of like the worst of the worst they were committing bank robberies and kidnappings and drug trafficking very very intense crying and I was you know this baby lawyer who's go assistant United States Attorney and they were investigated by the FBI really big deal but it's not when you break it down so even though there were times I thought oh my gosh I cannot believe that this is so much so hard it's so stressful why am I doing it any job is going to be like that anybody's going to have a struggle or a time when they think I can overcome this you can he's got to persevere I have been a lawyer on this is from Audrina I've been a lawyer for you have yours now I've been working in the field for 6 and I had 10 years of education before that regarding crime law and Behavioral Sciences like psychology and sociology so I've been doing only a few years I love it it's a lot of work it took me one try to pass the bar this is Angel's question but I study for like 3 months which is pretty normal and they just picked you don't work so from the time I graduated law school at the end of May I studied until the end of July July 21st or something what's the best and so for those would have 10 weeks or whatever all I did was study and it was hard so exhausting mentally like even though I wasn't doing everything all day was exhausted because your brain is firing off all day long but luckily I put enough into it that I was able to pass my first time the bar exam itself a lot of lawyers are pushing to get rid of it it's dumb and there's not really a reason for it cuz it Doesn't Really test how to go to the lawyer going to be at just how good you can memorize stuff they call it a test of minimum you have to just know enough to pass and then never comes up ever again so most lawyers are like why do we do this it's expensive because a lot of people out needlessly there's no point to it so you never have to take the bar exam or you go to Las Lomas, Wisconsin doesn't have a bar exam you graduate from Wisconsin law school you can practice law in Wisconsin and a lot of states are moving toward something like that but we're not there quite yet even though we really need to be there in lean so I don't get paid the same amount as an expensive lawyer I'm okay with that though I didn't get in the lawyer for money I got in the lot for tell people okay so Brandon asked as a public defender how do you I know it's talk about how do you know what the crime this is so just kind of go over like a case from start to finish I do use a federal case as an example cuz that's most days practice off this a lot of the times an investigator for a really long time by an agency like the FBI or the ATF or they're caught in the act those are the two ways that people are found to have committed crimes we know it we've been watching saw it hey did you even know it they thought they can go to a grand jury and say 23 members of the community hey I think this crime happened and if they agree the Bexar I might have happened they can file something called an indictment indictment is the start of the criminal process without a grand jury it's a whole different process same thing though so when somebody is indicted they have something called a first appearance and that is when we go to court and we go in front of a judge and at the first appearance will get a copy of the indictment the official charging documents. what you have been charged with and what the potential penalties are those are two very important things for somebody to know at the outset actually something written into our Constitution called you process everybody deserves due process includes notice in a right to be heard you can't be on notice if you don't know what you've been charged with the first appearance will read the charges read maximum penalties and then we'll go over your rights have the right to remain silent you have the right to be certain hearings you have the right to there's things that people need to know because it's all it's really important there's a lot and a lot of people don't know about these things because why would you so that going to Oregon but like I said I don't know everything about every crime ever when I see my client has been charged with I'll go do research on it I have to find out what is the government needs to prove to prove that my client committed this crime what do I need to find to make the government not able to prove those things so that's where you start then certain hearings like if you're in custody you have the right to a detention hearing and to ask the government to let you out of custody you have the right to let you know the certain motions you can file once all these things happened you start going through the key you can either leave guilty which is what a lot of people to or we can go to trial those are your two options guilty or not guilty and sometimes when people plead guilty they get better deals from the government cuz it says everybody a lot of time a lot of work in a lot of money in a lot of people know you got me I committed the crime so they're willing to do that so whatever they go through that whole process regardless either they're found not guilty to move on their acquitted or guilt is determined and then you move on to sin and then I send in seeing you and we both make an argument about what we think the sentence should be the judge will decide what the sentence should be and then they move on and you can appeal there's everything to move on past it but that's kind of like the skeleton of a general criminal case I have never worked in East l.a. I've only worked in California and San Francisco practicing law and then I worked in Spokane Washington and northern Idaho my practice federal law which was odd and then I now I'm in Seattle yeah but like Jackson mention I am trying to come back to California but no offense I will probably go back to Northern California a is up thank you you crushed I knew you be amazing thank you so much for sharing this for a living but I did give Jackson my email if you guys have more questions anyting I am happy to help I was really overwhelmed when I want to become a lawyer because like but I didn't know anybody would have done it and I am happy to help or give advice or do whatever I can answer any question so please please please feel free to email me I'm happy to help in whatever way you are always an inspiration to me so figured you know I'd share trying to share that light with the kids if they if they're if they're open to it thank you so much I don't know who's next but I know we we got to move on with you guys thank you for having me call Dave all right everybody still before I introduce our next guess he is a CHP officer I'm actually a very short video about five reasons why you may want to join the CHP turn off the reading back with another recruiter Wednesday here with a top-five reason that you should join the California Highway Patrol first and foremost we are the state police that affords you the opportunity to provide the people of California with the highest level of safety service and Security in addition officers are able to work anywhere throughout the same next we offer at no cost tax preparation that includes our applicant preparation program consisting of workshops seminars and group work out either held through all of our divisions within the state both in person and virtually so everybody is able to on top of that we provide paid training with no experience necessary we will train you while at our very own CHP Academy as a Cadet you will receive a salary in addition to Room & Board throughout your entire tray additionally we have special Duty assignments as well as promotional opportunity upon graduation from the academy you will become a Rhodes parole officer from there you can transition into a flight officer motorcycle officer K-9 Officer bicycle Patrol and much much more you get the shoes your career path last but not least we offer excellent benefits including a pension for your retirement Medical dental and vision for you and your family generous annual leave program all in addition to your salary what are you waiting for apply today at join the thieves p1000. all right but these are probably wondering what is a CHP officer essentially they're like the Guardians of the road they watch over highways freeways and big roads to make sure everyone stay safe while traveling their job is to help Drive enforce traffic laws traffic rules and assistant emergencies like accidents they like the superheroes of the road keeping us all safe on our Journeys sir mr. Frederick Adventist it is CPS officer in the city of Oakland California before he became a cop he worked as a teacher behavior interventionist and as a manager for retail store his dream was always to become a police officer if I knew he wanted to get his Education First his older sister became a up first and she's in LAPD officers in Los Angeles speaking to her about what it was like to be a police officer definitely motivated him to become one nicer car than it does have a kinesiology degree and a teacher credential post certificate which means he completed the police academy and holds a requirement to be employed as a police officer the CHP Academy is known to be one of the hardest police academies in California and in the US it is six months long and located in West Sacramento it is a living Academy diamonds you live in this facility for six months it challenged him mentally physically and emotionally he grew up in Southern Cal and Southern La he was born in the u.s.a. the Rays in Mexico for the first seven years of his life he had to learn English and start from zero he grew up with immigrant parents mr. Dennis wants you to know that if he can achieve his goal still can you it takes hard work and sacrifice if you're interested in joining the CHP they also have an Explorer Program which he wished he joined when he was your age so I want to walk in with her car then as today here I think it's much for more garlic morning everyone Murrieta I do know what your garden has personally we did go to school together so it's an honor to see his accomplishments of the CHP officer no matter what is a CHP officer I just briefly what I mean the video talk about a little bit but it's more than just that we basically how the freeway to keep you safe you know I don't know if I'm any of you guys have seemed like there's videos of CHP officers doing like traffic breaks which means they can the free the running all Lanes left and right left and right we don't do that for find we did last week because we get a call and maybe a debris which is an object in the lanes you know to avoid traffic accidents we stopped all traffic obviously our main concern for every to keep the road save especially and I are doing the days just to get impaired drivers which means driving Under the Influence that's kind of our main goals because we know the dangers of that we see it every day unfortunately I do my short time as a police officer I was able to see y'all ready for RipStik at car accident that involved high-speed like people being distracted on the phone driving on the phone I mean driving while looking at the phone either talking or just be distracted all racing I'll just horrible accident other people that are you can say are driving like being innocent have to suffer as well so our job is just to patrol the road to Highway specially and help everyone that needs help me you know whether it's a flat tire whether it's out of gas just things like that in the we wait so just base blow basic things that we do but it comes along way I'm so that's basically what the job requires as much as a thank-you I know you mentioned that you were motivated to pursue I feel because of their urine placing your sister but what else inspired you to pursue a career as a CHP officer it was a little stuff do you know look at my parents sacrificed for them coming to this great country you know and I do not have to take a ride and just somehow one of the things was just either South leg you know if some of the kids are from there are nearby you see a lot of things so they are you also see cops in the heat you know there is like two or three cops that help me out meant for me like how to get experience with them I've never had personal even growing up until the day I never had a bad experience with a cop so I always wanted to be someone that way hope the community will give back to the community I feel like that was the most effective way by protecting the community I'm usually a very protective type of human being so I was like what other way in and just becoming a cop and protecting the community that that I serve our that do you know just basically that's it being a protector thank you what is the easiest part of your job. So I'll be honest with you it can be very it's very on Vine in the sense of why you do it's never it's never the same day it's never you never you could plan anything else but one day it could be a call it could be someone in stress you could be someone like I know there was at the public defender talking about it we deal with people with Mental Health crisis to interventions that we deal with with things like that such never liked easy you can you say but it's definitely rewarding every single day when you have don't want to say thank you for it that doesn't come out in the music for chilling I know how a lot of prospective with law enforcement but there's a major things that you feel that inside of you that feels good that it goes unnoticeable you know people thank you for giving writing them a ticket because they're 100 mph like dude we're trying to save your life because you can lose control of your car it's not because we just want to give you a ticket in thinks I have people be on the phone you know people for being this or not having their seatbelt just little things like that that could help save that doesn't go in the news so I guess it's just not easy but it's very rewarding every single day you have someone and they appreciate that appreciate your service so thank you pics of your work usually do you find the most fulfilling or exciting is going up people like do you know you have the Airship on top of the drenalin gives you that it's exciting even though it's very dangerous but it's exciting cuz you're driving on the freeway trying to catch his bag out over that people and it's just excited for you. Driving on the freeway communicating with your part I think like that having a plan and it's just exciting driving fast I guess I love driving to because you are on the road are you involved in high speed chase quite often and if so often do you do you see or experience one specially in Oakland so Oakland the snow for high-speed so it's not as usually almost every single day but it also depends on the circumstances of the freeway if it's a lot of traffic we're going out we're not going to need your people that's what a lot of people so I can use on sale out why don't you guys go catch and we're not going to endanger the public because maybe this guy's driving very Reckless just that endanger everyone that surround himself sometimes we just don't pursue it as much as we just don't caught up which means a light switch is try to go a different way and catch him or write the driver's license so it just depends but it almost every single day and hopefully we will call for pursue now we also get coffee farmway drivers those are very dangerous those we have to preserve respond it's it's are, but we have to put our life first before or the public so we have to really respond to those agreed thank you for that what advice would you give to students were interested in pursuing a career in as a CHP officer if you like if you guys like especially Highway Patrol. Paw Patrol we we right by ourselves mean we have our own Patrol vehicle I know Vietnamese Town in California you guys might see like a like a like a pity they do Partners but we do it by yourself so you go on your own one day you're Your Own Boss basically there on Doubleday how to enforce laws how people and things like that last year and Graves which is a night you go with a partner you know I work Grace long time still that you get a partner it's also fun because you're with are you guys going just enforce the law as much as a date but it's just a very fun career very rewarding I just started Albert had like six months so I'm barely getting to know the job as I go every single day every day I wake up and try to charge them up thank you and I know we have a lot of high school students maybe be interested to going as a are starting as a safety officer what do they have to focus on in order for them to get into the academy what are some key things that you would recommend for them to start doing now that will help him get into the academy and eventually be a CHP officer so make sure you make the right decisions you know the where out there is champion make the right decision stay out of trouble start working out a lot because the academy is very very tough gets 6 months like our Dimension I live we live you have to live there if you become so you have to their travel Sacramento live there for 6 months will wake up at 4 in the morning to go workout run to from 3 to 10 Mi an hour a day to do in 300 push-ups 300 sit-ups long as you don't quit that just want you to know how mentally strong are you with yourself you know again to stay out of trouble go to school if you are you guys are young so I wish I'd joined the store program I didn't know the address of it because obviously I'm in Oakland book look at look at your local CHP office around you and just ask Explorer Program they're usually I'll have them and then he'll teach you what the academy is like and don't men treat you right there so you can go on Academy and leave you become an Explorer you kind of have a hits on when you fly to the to become a CHP officer once rue21 Illinois that you were an Explorer so that could help your application be okay well he kind of knows the way of what it's like to be an academy and I believe in the Explorer program youth also they also travel you to the academy to give you a little taste of what it's like awesome taking a cigar then that's open up the chat because I know students have so many questions and I want to we want to hear what they want to ask so I think it is for those it that started dropping some questions in the chat Rihanna has a great question she said it School in like and what knowledge did you need to have in order to complete the academy it's gorgeous more if you have a degree to be a lot of people have a criminal justice degree but you don't really need right after high school you can apply and become a cop it does help with the pay you get paid more if you have a degree so you don't really need it so degree speed at the house I have a high school diploma and when you do get paid more so they are to get higher education like the police academies going to be there no matter what it's not going so the job is going to be there so when I get your degree to get the most of it with lyrics by Katy paymore are to be honest a lot of people might not like the job so you have a degree that might you might be lying so that's what I have a teaching degree maybe if I didn't like I could go ahead and go back to teaching and things like that that's great you're having a back-up plan doesn't hurt that's excellent so I have a lot of great questions in the chat didn't ask how old do you have to be in order to be Explorer Program I'm not sure I could investigate. I know it's like maybe I can high schoolers or even Middle School's I'm not sure I seen some coffee with a very young like I said I maybe just call you receipts be off going to look all this and don't let you know or even joint light on the website but I really don't know but I know it's like somewhere high school or middle school I'm familiar familiar with the Explorer's I have seen students as young as Middle School even start programs so they be they're interested you can always check out your local community and see what explorer programs they have for students who potentially want to go into the academy that's a great question he says he wants to be just like you but is there any fears you have to face when being an officer and he also says thank you for your service or they've people man so I just leave everything to God but I just go out there and just try to live in a like a like a normal day you do get a lot of fear when you try to have someone maybe on the road that has a flat tire as simple as that those people just driving down to shoulder the ATM what's an hour you're a protector right you get out of your pee UPS Patrol vehicle and you just you know the fear of them just going so fast and if you get hit it's part of the job but you do seriously need to try to get out of the freezer as much as possible. you out there trying to help out in I mean you can't really think about fear as much as you just have to do your service and know what you're there for you not know what know what you signed up for excellence or any other questions students that you like to ask Miss Cardenas here have you ever had to make a split was it a pit maneuver you have to Sergeant has to approve pit maneuver on the radio you have to be like I'm ready for a bit on the sergeant has to approve that whether it's safe to do so obviously there's pedestrians if there's other cars but yeah I did doing an academy sign Academy you get to drive the fast car where you got to qualify see you qualify with shooting you have to qualify that could get you out of the Academy have to go to fit be physically fit I can get you out and then you have to drive a car about 120 miles an hours, high-speed we have an academy to have their own track so just pretend it's like a man Star Trek type of thing the academy has it I'll let you borrow the car you drive there with instructor and you you hit those up and then you hit the pit maneuver as well and did you qualify for all that stuff basically afternoon but not yet not in the streets you might want to do it but not myself excellent thank you thank you for that question I've seen your questions that we want to ask Mister kind of that last before we move on to our next guest speaker is it rewarding when people thank you for your service but definitely that's the thing that keeps you going every single day so the the unnoticed the things that don't come in the news about cops being bad everyday people thank you for your service and you like thank you for what you do those are what keeps me going every day it makes you wear the uniform proud you know cuz of the things that don't go unnoticed and prove it's just that person individually you know you did something for that day I know like the public defender said she wants to come another California I'm the opposite so hopefully I go back home to La soon I want to transfer back to offices in La so I mean I'm in Oak Cliff but also when you find Academy you do a list real quick if you guys finish graduate you do a list of the other officers cuz you can be placed anywhere in California anywhere in California so I put LA and I got place in here in Northern California so just to let you guys know if you guys are open to moving sacrificing I'm here by myself family surrounding the it's a sacrifice but those are things that you join you if you get that you can happen if you join the CHP you can be placed anywhere in California thank you so much Mr Gardiner's I thank you so much for taking the time to be here with us today and sharing your experiences about become a CHP officer and it's great to see you again thank you for having me David remember this morning for you guys see one of your family members spreads and I drink and tell him not to drink and drive cuz very dangerous all right thank you so much for that advice want to hurt our next speaker very shortly I'm going to see if she's logged in yet if my team can see if dr. Sam is in is in the attendee list that be great while we wait for her I do want to share this video that mister The Nasher with me this is a little Glimpse about what it's like living in the academy you mentioned that you do have to live 6 months in order for you to get your speech p.m. certification we're going to watch 3 minutes if you can get an idea what it's like living in a foot facility with all your sense of your colleagues you basically live there for 6 months you train hard and you could they prepare you for a career as a CHP officer gentleman Washington Hooters gently easily spread end of the various types of roadways intersections going to be the most hazardous for us when we're clearing intersections we need to clear left then right and then left again at something that you guys should write down we clear left then right then left again after stopping for a red signal we can wait two seconds before we enter the intersection and what will making a cookie run with our four red light we cannot have this vehicle on the right instead of stick her head out and if we see any oncoming traffic we're going to talk right back behind this car wait for these vehicles to yield this is an ID what it's like to live in the academy you basically are dorming with your colleagues and you do training for 6 months and it is very intensive so hopefully somebody found that very exciting and interesting are at so we are going to return next guest speaker before we introduce of doctors we're going to the show very short video of what it's like to be in Internal Medicine physician and dr. Sam if you're here or have you have your key on my camera is on thank you for having me or just want to make sure that was you we weren't sure because I miss you and and I talked all about a specifically your rolls and internal medicine or going to show up soon as a video of a little bit about what it's like working as internal medicine addition many medical doctors specialize in treating a particular illness or part of the body but internist or general doctors Lucy adult patients for all their medical needs they usually Act Cedar Primary Care Providers or is it inpatient doctors known as Hospital list these doctors are experts and medical conditions that affect the vital organs of the abdomen and chest but they also treat conditions that affect other areas of the body such as joints in the brain internist to provide Primary Care work in outpatient clinics there they diagnose and treat common health problems and how patients manage chronic conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure they prescribed medications and give advice and Ferb disease as well such as which vaccines to get and Healthy nutrition options they also document patience test results examination notes and medical history internist May provide regular care for patients for many years I clinics or patients just once an Urgent Care settings they are frequently exposed to infectious diseases and must be able to manage stressful situations treating very sick or dying patients becoming an internet requires four years of medical school after college and three years of residency training training includes long hours night shifts and your regular schedules General internist May pursue additional training and Specialties such as Cardiology or Gastroenterology excellent Internal Medicine physician does so miss caselotti or a wonderful teacher here she's going to introduce a little bit about what a medical director does an insurance card a little a little background of a doctor Sam my students we're so thrilled to have dr. Sam join us a medical director is kind of like the captain of a team of doctors and nurses they helped make sure that everyone at hospital or Health Center is doing their best to take care of the patients they decide on important things like what treatments are best for patients and how to keep everyone safe and healthy kind of like a coach that guides a sports team America director guides the medical team to help people feel better and get better when they're sick or hurt so dr. Sam is a medical director dr. Sam is an internist with an internal medicine degree from Yale New Haven Hospital after graduation dr. Sam joined a hospital in Tucson Arizona and work for 6 to 7 years there as a hospitalist kind of like the person that we saw on the video afterward she became a United Healthcare medical director but never left the clinical field doctor Sam worked as a part-time nocturnus and after as a primary care Health provider for El Rio clinic in Tucson Arizona this Clinic provides care for underprivileged communities in Arizona so welcome dr.sam thank you for joining us we have kindergarteners through 12th graders on this webinar so just letting you know who our audience is can you tell us a little bit about your life and what you do and then I have some questions too but feel free to share with whatever you'd like about your position thank you very much for having me here and I'm really really honored to be part of this kind of this group so I just have a very different and you know multiple different you know basically a background in medicine. Kind of what I'm doing right now and I love about my job I'm working at a Telehealth provider for this Clinic and the things I love about this job that it look like I open I do a house visit for every patient that I have so let me talk a little bit about being a doctor's being a doctor is not fun or in a glorious find up the trip or in a journey that you going to have like a big police officer and stuff you know I don't have any of this glorious movie to show it to you guys the good thing is that you want to be a doctor you need to have a passion and on top of this passion you need to have a lot of great and that I'm talking about the great it means that dated a hard job and you need to enjoy from this job that you are doing because being a doctor it's going to take a very very long you know journey to become a doctor but you need to enjoy from every single time of your life that you have to be a doctor you need to be a very good detective you need to go to the bottom of the problem and find what's going on with every patient that you have and you also can get in Chinese you need to how to basically health patient in many other ways that only you can basically adjust the patient's medication or give a patient in new medication sometimes you need to learn how to send the patient play new special how you need to order the new test how even sometimes you need to help the patient in the social life treat that the patient has because as I said you know lots of the patient that on there are the patient or does not have any car to take them to the doctor's visit I have a lot of patient who does not even have enough money to buy food for themselves or their apps how many other issues that they have that I need to on top of helping them for their all medical problem I need to help them for their day-to-day life and they are the issues that they have so being a doctor is not sometimes it's easy because you need to learn to kind of the you know you going to see so many patient in one day and you need to learn to be professional you need to be a good listener you need to learn not to judge any patient because lot of our patient not only have a problem with you no medical problems are there social issues and we need to be a good listener understand the problem and give them some feedback to help them in day-to-day life and also we need to be a very very good don't you know have a good at giving you good at sentient or patient be a good listener is one part of the you know visit and also so I was like need to do to talk and lawyers talking about the bar exam to be a good doctors you need to do the ongoing you know basically updating yourself as a doctor every 10 years your could you have major exam so basically the group that is controlling us make sure that we are up-to-date and our knowledge is enough to be able to treat the patient every tree every one year we need to do it because it's continuous medical education we need to attend some talk or webinar and make sure that you have enough knowledge so so this speak a doctor it means that you need to go on the go multiple levels of Education every every year or every 10 years the other thing is that as a doctors sometimes you need to learn to stay calm for example one of the things that you going to learn when you become a doctors and they become a resident and we can you go to the medical school and become a basically you decided which kind of part of the body how to treat and you go to the do you go to the hospital a lot of time patient has it emergency in the hospital for example the heart stopped beating and you are the doctor become the head of a team you become a if a team who need to save the patient they need to basically take the patient back to the life so this is basically you need to learn to control yourself in a stressful air condition and sometimes a lot of this condition is going to be on time in your sometimes these patients heart-stopping and have on top of it has some other medical problems so you need to basically improvised need to control yourself to manage the whole team so you don't not only need to be called you need to be a good basic safety coordinator you need to be a good part of the whole team to being a doctor need a lot of heart. what's on top of it just don't forget tinga doctor you know you going to be able to support yourself and also you need to work long hours sometimes you need to sacrifice all of your weekend and holiday spot you know just don't forget that patient got sick every time so you are not in control of your life because you need to help the p what you need you shouldn't leave your patient and you shouldn't be tired of your job so the most important things that I'm going to tell you guys today think the doctor meet you need to be any passionate is a name of a k dr. Sam may I ask you a couple questions sure that was a really beautiful overview so you mentioned that you have to have a passion for her seen others you have to be able to learn how to manage your emotions how to multitask and and see the big picture you mentioned having to help your patients sometimes with things other than medical issues tell me this when what would someone who has a passion to help others what would be the in high school and middle school what should they be thinking about in terms of preparing them so how to apply for a college if they're interested in going into medicine what kinds of things should they be doing in middle school and high school to get ready to even just apply because it's very good question so you know I have a college kid and I also have a middle schooler to what I'm telling both of them the only thing the only only only thing that shows people going to be able to succeed in this way great and I'm going to tell you one thing if you want to be a doctor no matter what you going to be a doctor because and it shouldn't be your plan B it should you plant a it doesn't matter how many refuse all you going to go get from you no different colleges just caught it doesn't not accept me just call it does not accept me know if you want to you going to do it there is a way to be a doctor if you really really want the doctor because the only thing you need is a hard work and hard work and hard and for a middle school what I'm going to tell you guys if you want to be a doctor you should be number one is which should be okay and don't be scared don't be intimidated just just plan your life regularly like it you know if you want to be if you are middle school early like it just oh and do the chorus to the band everything that is can improve your resume like everything that's been the people opening up your resume and looking at it says that this is it been rounded 360 person that takes care of every aspect of the life you don't need to do anything about going to the middle school and just be a well-rounded student for the college student thought I kind of what I can tell you guys just apply for different colleges and don't be disappointed if just you know if I want to go to the Des that's what need to be do I'm sure that is so the counselor that is going to be able to give you all the information but what I can tell you greet in passion and be a 360-degree then rounded kit that work on every aspect you need to be work on there I said he part of your life you need to work on your in a music part of your life everything so you know when you going to the college you shouldn't be a person who sitting in front of the computer for 10 hours I'm just play computer or games you need to basically basically take care of every part of your life and it keeps finding the person looking to resume says that this gets to English you know exercise disc it working for the community no, he's pissed off just gets doing band and chorus this kid knows what he or she wants from the life that's great that's great advice so focusing on getting excellent grades and focusing on being a well-rounded individual not just someone who sits in front of the computer and studies all day but has other interests that they excel in and that they work hard in school at what point I think a lot of kids wanted will say oh yeah I want to be a doctor at what point in their career will they or not in their career in their preparation will they need to decide what type of doctor they're interested in being Let Me Maybe you could talk a little about the different types of doctors there are in at what point they would need to kind of start gearing in that direction Las Vegas question so to be a different type of a doctor you know it's number one and how much is related to your personalities and what you expect you to do in your life so this is a two part of your life what is your personality if you are a third guy has outgoing social social social person so you want to see people if you are very determined and you know kind of the person who not basically don't spend on their distress maybe you going to have a passion to do more surgery do you want to go to the surgical if you are very shy person and not enjoying you know seeing patient and you're not very kind of still adaptable to see 20 or 30 patient per day maybe some other in browse like it's doing the Radiology or pathology or Honda Civic better for you so over the years when you said this is the best part being going to the medical school because when it goes off can you go to school and you can start going to the funeral today in the hospital and do the different rotation you going to see different patient and you basically find your way because you said that okay I just heard a i d ACU intensivist job and you know and I basically lost housing patient I love to deal with a stressful situation I love to take care of a patient who are crashing every minute and how to make a decision about it or I do want to do the surgery I want to open up the patient and I need to learn how to be able to manage the patient or I have a most attractive brain and I want to do the internet staying at I want to be at like a different part of the branch of the medicine that the ENT or like it you know Stroh's or want to be there urologist for surgery part is all different part of life that you are basically managed so that's one of the best way I can. What thank you for that what what type of class is especially in high school should kids be taking I know the you mentioned that kids should be well-rounded and they should do they should do they should excel in everything but in terms of going towards the medical field which types of classes should they be taking this is especially for high schoolers go to high school if you know for the high school area. I don't think I don't think I can afford is a for my son you know every type of the 80 going to help them even though what's for the undergraduate you know I have seen the kids that are even doing it in English literature or you know like a philosophy or any kind of the major in the undergraduate be able if they have a good grade and have it still are you know kind of the resume today or is it equal to the medical school I don't think there is don't be kind of just do your a piece your resume good like a community services charity job like if you know doing the music after he thinks all of them can take you to the. You don't need to go and do a specific kind of undergraduate before going to the medical school when I was when I used to go in front of us a Yale New Haven Hospital resident and you know that's one of the best presidents in the countries we have basically attending that was a priest and he did there he was a priest actually he was a priest and then he needed the undergraduate on Selassie and then came to Yale New Haven Hospital and has it you know and he was admitted he was a combination of the medicine and Pediatrics graduate so everything can take you over to don't worry about what you need to do in the medic in the high school hey thank you for that 110 we have a little bit more time can you tell us one high and one love from your career that you can record it could be one high of in a related to Patient Care a moment that you had in one load that was really challenging for you to get through don't you know they're going to be there's going to be some pause and so many Lowe's in your job and you know they're going to have so many disappointing part of your life you know I'm going to be honest I lost the job one time you know I start a job and they told me I which ones that they don't they were dead in all this don't think that you know because I was a female and they said that they don't throw me out they told me basically you know I they don't think that on my basic Pikachu Fortis job it was one of the lowest part of my job so what should I do I should be depressed I should go since that okay medicine is not part of my career I need to do something else know what you going to do you going to reinvent yourself you can learn from your mistake cuz there's going to be so many Lowe's in this job but at the same time they're going to be so many highs in this job and as much as you going to get the negative feedback from the people that are people that praise you put and then what you can learn from the life that throughout the life you just remembered the highs and the lows going to go away what does remaining of the lowest part that's the lesson to give it to me because every time I fall I learn how to stand up and work harder thank you so much dr. Sam this was really inspiring reminding us how important it is to do our best and not stopping to be resilient and to show up thank you so much for joining us thank you very much for having me I don't have a glorious talk but I'm just talkin from my heart you know what dr. Sam I think your talk was really inspirational Utah everyone in here that if they wanted to be a doctor they could be they could be I mean thank you so much for taking time to come and talk to her students you enjoy the rest your day thank you very much and have a wonderful day everybody bye bye by Tink and please make sure that mr. Tanner is what is a panelist we're going to introduce his career so we're still very short video of what it's like to be a firefighter and then Mister Slater is going to introduce our next guest speaker courage strength and a coup who had Under Pressure are some of the most important qualities needed by firefighters firefighters control and put out fires and respond to crisis situations where life in the environment are at Red firefighters a burning building to a English fires and rescue people sometimes carrying them they connect hoses to hydrants Aubrey pumps climb ladders and use other tools to breathe through debris the majority of calls they receive are for medical emergencies so many firefighter also provide medical attention some firefighters clean up hazardous materials such as oil spills and chemical accident while others are specially trained to control forest fires most firefighters work for local governments for federal and state governments or at airports chemical plants or other industrial site volunteer firefighters serve the same roles has paid firefighters and account for a large portion of the workforce in Pittsfield firefighter schedules are typically on duty at the fire station for 24 hours at a time then off for 48 to 72 hours Wildland firefighters may work for extended periods to get a forest fire under control firefighters have one of the highest rates of injuries and illnesses of all occupations they must wear heavy hot protective gear firefighters typically need a high school diploma valid driver's license and emergency medical technician certification candidates must see definitely complete interviews written and physical fitness test Fire Academy training and one tired they must pass random drug test all right come take it away the banks Tanner so much for joining us this is Mister Tanner ready I don't want to ever I don't know being excited about an emergency call or anything like that but he was slated to go on first he and his team had to respond to that to a crisis so I want to say that's cool but for a career that you know part of the excitement of the job but firefighters no doubt I'm just a slight hard like real life Heroes who help with fire or an accident they rescue people and pets from burning buildings are cars and put out fires firefighters teaches how to stay safe from fires and other dangers there strong Brave and always ready to help keep our community safe Tanner thank you so much for joining us then welcome yeah thank you so much you guys were having me want to make sure you guys come here and see me before I go into a steel and you know who's tracking myself in your bio on the slide ya ever you want to use a tell us about how's it going I'm working today right now I apologize if we get another call for service I will have to go since there is no one left in the station by me and my crew so I apologize in advance but yeah so happy to be here first and foremost I just can't say enough about how much I enjoy my job and I heard a couple other people speak in prison about what they did and how passionate they are I think I go to Echo. Same sentiment of whatever you end up choosing to do whether you know being in the medical field construction and public service and Sons for mother it's this or even being a police officer whatever it may be right graphic design whatever your passion is peace following cuz that's what's going to get you to be to that point in your life where you are truly happy and fulfilled and that's what brings me to my next plan the reason why I chose to work this find a work is because it gives me the most of ailment I get to help everyday I show up to work I've always been that type of person that enjoys giving you know helping people out in their time of need whether it's something small as you know you're picking people up encouraging on versus I'm actually helping people during a severe crisis there a medical emergency or fire for me yeah that's where my heart is still a little bit of how I got here it was a long journey for me it took me 8 years of the moment I graduated high school to where I'm at today maybe a little bit more than eight years now but yeah I first started once I graduate college and started doing my fire science the local gym near College in my area had a fire science program which I knew about ahead of time and start taking the classes right away along with that I started taking my EMT courses after that got some experience work in the work doesn't answer also did a couple of side jobs just to kind of keep up with my skills and like learn learn more about myself and kind of diving to like make myself more well-rounded that includes working in construction I did that for a number of years I grew up not very mechanically inclined I just played Sports privately growing up so I had to learn a new skill set of using my hands getting familiar with tools smaller engine and that pay dividends for me now and their line of work that I and where I'm actually using lots of tools and machines and pumps on a daily basis I also worked in the restaurant industry I worked at a local restaurant in my area for a number of years as well and I fell a lot to Dock Brewery I can't speak enough about those people that live and do that job day in day out it takes a lot of energy and patience cuz you're dealing with people on a daily basis but I learned a lot about public service. and customer relations and that even goes Way Beyond what I thought would prepare me for this line of work where I do speak with people on a daily basis a lot of what my job is just having a dialogue with somebody else conversing about what's going on in their lives or trying to make it better quite simply all we do oh yes it looks really cool with the lights and driving down the streets and climbing ladders and pulling us don't get me wrong that is cool but really a lot of what we do just boils down to being good people per people person once I finish my EMT course my fire academy video did a good job gave me like a really good synopsis of everything I did most of the states Academy empty Academy I got my fire science degree I wanted to the field I end up volunteering for a number of years two years to get experience it isn't very competitive especially in the Bay area where I'm at currently to get a job firefighter so I had to do everything I could to make myself more well-rounded and gather experience where I could the volunteer time was unpaid I was doing it once a week once a day or so every once a week for a 24-hour. All in pain longtime lot of hours bed not getting any monetary benefit from it once I got experience I actually went back to school to be a paramedic just to gather more experience again and make myself more of a well-rounded tool that somebody may want to come by and I are what you end up happening soon as I got my paramedic and got a little experience thing that I got a job right away is firefighter in the greater Lake Tahoe area if you guys are familiar I know you guys are from the Southern California region Lake Tahoe in the mountains but that's where I got my first job paid as a firefighter paramedic and then back home in the in the Bay Area dive in a little bit on what it means to be both a firefighter and paramedic I think that's a unique occupation because I not only do the fire stuff I have to do the ambulance stuff what you see behind me here we go to both fires in emergencies when you call 911 you're getting both an ambulance more likely and a fire engine or fire truck I'm specially trained to do both the city that I work for the city of Berkeley we have what we call Jewel capable Fighters so we split half of our time on an analyst and half of our time on the fire engine and kind of has like a rotation at me and my co-workers go through so one day I'll be on this the next day I'll be on the fire engine which is right next to me over here which makes my job really unique there any at any given point I could be helping somebody in the streets of Berkeley and downtown to the next thing I could be cutting a roof on a on a fire because I have both jobs so yeah all of the things that I do to make myself more well-rounded we like to call her Sophie a couple trays in the fire service were not masses of anything but we're kind of good at a lot of different things right now sorry guys One S no worries no worries but the job I think we're good I do other things as well we have water here in the Bay Area obviously so I took it upon myself to get more well-rounded in water rescue I have a couple other extra certification make myself more capable in case we have somebody in the water a boat that's gone astray and you know how to see your whatever we are able to help them in those times of need as well so yeah I'm open to questions if you have more questions for me even go ahead and go down that path students feel free to put your your questions in the chat I was just going to start off by asking more about how much work you had to do in order to take you to get a job hired by a fire fighting around by a Fire House 2 years ago and here volunteering plus all the other certifications in and things that you've trained to do so is that the norm is it always that tough is it tougher and more populated areas that's a good question yeah it is very difficult cuz that's good jobs are at so you kind of see yourself kind of doing as much as you can like I did too broad and myself and build up my resume going to the junior colleges going to this EMT school going to the paramedic schools that aren't exactly the most inter or like coolest things you don't like a four-year degree that I'm getting nothing like that. Seems to be like the main people like to go into that pathway which is there's nothing wrong with that a lot of people that I work with are for your majors in business or can you see ology Sports Medicine Dilaudid those types of people that I work with but it's like I said it was a long at yours but it was probably the most rewarding things to do cuz now I'm I'm in the career field for the rest of my life the way you started by talking about how you're already feeling certain fulfillment and that that's what you were aiming for that seems terribly wise and I would want any young person to really think about what do you want to be when you're Thirty or forty or fifty and fulfil it is probably the best answer to that and all the other things you learned along the way I mean wouldn't you say that helps you feel better in the in the skin rain in the position that you're in now having you know learned all those things along the way absolutely it's the life experience you got her going through all those things that you gain more from that than anything else you don't realize it when you're in it sorry I'm I'm taking you and the restaurant industry or Food Service like that they definitely say the same thing that we talked about how much prepared them for everything but yeah going through difficult things is is what makes you come out stronger and you're in this position now yeah absolutely and I'm getting a ton of really good questions already you can pick and choose whatever you want or we can take it away cuz I'm getting a good one awesome EMT school it's a good like a lot of schools you can learn that are super real life I am I scared when I go into a fire that's actually really good question are we train so much I'm being prepared for when that call comes in that you actually don't really have a second think about the the what could happen it's hard to describe you you get ingrained into doing the call that you're supposed to do so well and it's kind of I should say beaten into but the training is so regimented that you don't really think about being scared cuz you know that I know I have a job to do and there's other people here I mean that are going into that situation with me and as a very team atmosphere so you don't feel like you're alone sounds like being on a team what what it's like to be on a team in other sports and other high-level I'm here to do a job and and I know that if I don't do it that's messed up people around me so everyone just be at school and what is recommended question I have family members that are pursuing this path is are younger they just graduated high school they're going to colleges in the area around here and I told him all the same thing you know that you if you want to do this don't you don't feel like you have to do it right away go get that life experience will get that for you to breathe that's what you want to do because I'm all translates really well into the fire service the fire service is a Melting Pot of lots of people's backgrounds experiences that makes us think utiful makes our job beautiful in the fact that I was experiencing all together we're able to provide the service to the people we swore to protect and not just better produces it's a better product for them the age I would recommend currently is anywhere in like you're 25 to 28 year like if you're that girl that's a perfect age to start because it is a long career if you want to fully maximize your amount of time and you're in regards to retirement people typically retire and in this day and age around 2:57 to fully benefit from that so that's why I say don't rush if you get in when your 22nd which is great if you get that that's awesome and it will be a long time now in this job is taxing physically there's a lots of studies coming out about what what firefighters go through on a daily basis. That leaves health issues which we will get into later I've seen some questions about that it's not a it's not a Sprint this is a marathon and we do all we can to finish the race so to speak I not know this and I don't actually know the exact stuff with the V so that played before you went on talked about how the ships were 24 hours long which of the real that is that is that what you experienced is that pretty in a row that is it slowly changing the culture is changing to now where we do 48 hours on chess now I know you're four days four days or 96 hours at home now that sounds intimidating at first but you do get used to it and let me tell you the four days at home in a row are very nice people work 50 years old I feel to that having four days at home I get that. But either way it's obviously we get leap year we do live here I saw a question about that I live at this station for two days straight I have my room upstairs me and four other men and women that are here at any given time but it is a home-away-from-home that we spend a third if you really think about it we spend a third of Our Lives yeah at at this place until we get to know each other very well our families get to know each other very well almost too well and sometimes you live with somebody you get to learn a lot about yeah I see couple that questions there was a question about cancer we can talk about that cuz I don't want to make it all sunshine and rainbows but yeah there is an increased chance of cancer there's lots of studies coming out about that thankfully I'm in the department that is very proactive about cancer prevention Boston fire departments in the in the area and in the country are catching on to lots of ways to prevent that we have lots of different ways to decontaminate ourselves since we do once we're done with the fire we have all the policies in place where we're not allowed anything else after fire until we get back to our station and go take a shower and we have lots of different like soaps and shampoos to get as much of those carcinogens out of our bodies are people so yes that it did that is something space we do have an increased chance of cancer and cardiovascular diseases which again is a bummer but there's lots of things we can do to prevent that that also includes eating really while sleeping as much as we can we'll meet working out being physically fit all those things coming to fly to help prevent us getting sick with cancer support about by the way you're talking about absolutely she somebody saying how often do I get into dangerous situations quite honestly very rarely less than 1% we we we go to the we go to us you know I sent us a scene like fire or even a vehicle accident on the freeway which is is also just as dangerous if not more so and we we don't really put ourselves in those and those directions if we can help it yeah you can you can always fall victim to the things that you can't plan but like I said those are very rare we're very proactive and planning things we have lots of things in place to prevent injuries to prevent things from happen I would say less than 1% of the time I've been in the in the dangerous situation believe it or not like I said a little bit earlier freeway accident I actually appreciate it I believe his name was on the strip Cardenas who was on earlier said about the freeways when he said they talked about making breaks into Highway those are for us actually or when we were on scene of a vehicle accident with those those interactions because distracted driving is a thing can they often get close to us to be honest anyting else what is the scariest thing I've ever done there is one girl that we do in preparation for graduation as we have to climb that aerial ladder that I'm sure you guys have seen the truck go straight up the Ariel goes the latter go Stacy play almost vertical and we as a vote of confidence and see if we can actually handle it are told that we need to climb that and stand at the very top and it is intimidating it's challenging it's physically hard because not only am I climbing I have all my gear on it's about 75 extra pounds of weight and you have to climb it and it takes a long time but once you're at the top you can take that break and look around is Austin from you know I could see the Golden Gate Bridge every day almost at work. I'm so blessed to be able to do that. So yeah the kids it's fantastic Asia display on the scariest thing as I do is find that ladder it is intimidating the speed limit I have had to drive fast I would say that I'll leave it to it we do how to drive a little faster to get the medical emergencies we don't drive on in a dangerous manner but we could to drive fastest time a life that's exciting to I don't see any other questions at this time where are we going to go from that I was going to say if you had a memorable lesson or a piece of advice that has guided you cuz I like how you were talking about you know everyone will find their path and then picking you get you but you do advice that's just good for for everyone like that yeah I would say the biggest piece of ice going forward when speaking out of career I know I already took them being being passionate about what you do but I'll be patient it takes time it doesn't happen right away I found myself very discouraged at times when I wasn't getting hired like I said it took me eight years from start to finish one of the background packet side of the pillow to get this job in particular I had two lists everywhere I've applied and it was a hard 5 to 10 minutes of filling out that form and it was basically reminder of how many times I failed it was awkward to 3030 Appling 30 nose and there was lots of times where I thought maybe this wasn't going to work out for me and I was going to have to find something else I encourage anyone that's listening to just keep pursuing the passion that you after the job it will it will happen there's reasons for things that we can explain there's timings there's time for everything and it will happen to you if you just keep pursuing it keep being passionate about to keep working hard towards it you're going to make it to where whatever that is why I can't stress that enough rely on your friends your family that supports this to me I have to get you through those cuz there's actually lots of help out there I had to find the breakdown in you have to scrape away the pride of not getting help and once I actually reached out to him and I need some help getting to this thought in my my career and once I did that it made all the difference in the keepers doing it keep your down keep working hard and you think of things lap and I can't stress that enough that's super inspiring and you everything that's worthwhile is on the opposite side of hard work and patience and stuff like that so that it's cool to see a living example. how much for joining us. Of course I really appreciate it this is a unique opportunity to speak with younger folks that are interested possibly in fire service job I will leave with this this career field is actually it's hiding a harder time finding good people believe it or not covid has change this change this atmosphere it used to be pretty challenging to get hired and I will stay right now if you do the things that I have I mentioned about getting a y'all getting your EMT paramedic all that stuff right you actually probably will be in this seat like I am sooner than I it sooner than it took me because we're we are stretched looking for good people and that's everywhere and especially are we get paid pretty well we have great benefits all of that but it's just hard finding good people that we are willing to work in this line of work so I encourage those who are even thinking about it you might be surprised at my happen sooner than you think. Hopefully you're fired I will let you go you have a good rest of your day and everything and I absolutely think I left my email for you if people have any other questions feel free to shoot an email to me a picture of Jackson and yeah awesome pic. Russell said that she is a great dear friend of my shift price of educational background I thought she would be great to have her and tell us a little bit about what she does because I want her to tell us what exactly is a patent lawyer and what does a peddler do so welcome. Thank you for joining us today yeah thank you so much Miss Burnett alive I honestly feel honored to be here and thank you so much for inviting me and ask Miss Pernell mention week we go way back we actually I think we're friends since middle school so it's it's it's it's really nice that she considered me to be part of the Tano I sincerely appreciate it and I got to listen to Tanners a presentation which is really cool because I actually lived in Berkeley for so long I did my undergraduate there and work for a few years so to hear of firefighter from Berkeley speak I was like wow. very impressive yeah and so just I wanted to talk a little bit about what patent attorney is so you know I think about property right there's cars there's houses toys or anything that you physically on until exit property is property that you created that you also have rights to for example you know intellectually you you come up with his invention lets up just giving you an example like let's say a flying car you were to invent a flying car well as the inventor you have rights over that cuz you been acting so much time efforts and money to come up with this with this idea and it's really important that I actually have you no protection for your invention because it promotes the advancement of technology and as an inch let's say an adventure invents a creation date they hire an attorney in the like hey you know it can this be patented and well did this technology already exists does it not and if it doesn't exist like is the Innovative is it something that can actually get patented and this is where my technical background comes into play because to become a patent attorney you actually need that technical background because we need to understand the signs that technology like how it works because explain it and once we see like okay this this invention doesn't exist yet it can be patented we draft an application which can be very technical which is why the technical degree comes into play and we provided to the United States patent and trademark office and tell them hey we want a patent this invention and then the examiner they start you know they tell it's okay this is something that can get patented or they're like oh maybe you need some tweaks here and there because we're not going to we're not Google until these changes you know our main so it's the back and forth and once it actually becomes Pattinson and inventor has the right over that property for 20 years and what that means is like let's say for example I've invented a flying car Miss spinetti wants to use the fun car while my KY have patents over this invention because I treated it you can use it if you license it so you know license typically means money and then that way you know the inventor is getting up station for the invention that you created and it's only allowed for 20 years because obviously we don't want to have a monopoly right we want to promote the advancement of Technologies and inventions can range from literally water slides social media platform filter medication phones what have you like there's a broad range of inventions and it's really great because as Mia for me what would I really enjoy about my job cuz I'm always learning it's never a dull moment and sometimes I have to really learn to technology something that I'm not too familiar with but again for me I just really liked it cuz I just feel like something you always learning never the same thing and I I find a lot of joy in that very exciting very complex two if you're free to say what is the coolest inventions you ever work with a really good question because I've actually a broad range of technologies that I work with I think favorite has been a social media platform filter you know I use social media and I use filters all the time but this client we need a we need a department of specific filter and it really gets you to learn the back scene there's so much Systems computer science that goes into this filter and I think ever since then you'll never see a filter the same way but for me it's like you know it's why I'm not just using it for fun, I actually did you know that this in this goes into the filter so a me I ever since then I just I was just very fascinated that literally you can patent any little thing which is the great part of Of Inventions in the filter do you work with Adventures from all over the world that's a very good question I personally worked with inventors mainly in the US but there are folks that do work with Adventures from all over the world and inventions are world most of my clients that I've worked with have been in California but just in the US but then we protect within the us we also seek protection and under International right because we want this production tonight just be within the West but also elsewhere really cool I know it's an attorney we always see there's always are always in a courtroom in front of a judge is that similar with as a patent law for the patent lawyer no so people who are normally in a courtroom are litigators I am not a litigator I don't go in front of a judge or court room I'm more of a transactional attorney so I create event work its applications are transactional contract to make sure we avoid litigation so I do more like the back scenes before litigation happens and I feel like that's more of the person that I am I'm very detail-oriented and I would like to help people avoid problems we're at litigators they're there to help you once you're bound in that pickle but of course you know the important thing about getting patent protection over your your your your inventions is that once you have an issue patent and somebody works we don't copy your invention then you have every right to tell him to stop using it and if they don't then it leaves to typically a courtroom really cool I didn't know that I'm sure what inspired you to pursue a career in patent law so I actually my second career I was an engineer for a few years for a well-known rapid transit system in the Bay Area and I didn't hear him because I was very good at math Berry good at physics very good at solving problems as i k engineering is my calling but once I started in engineering I always knew like in the back of my head I was like okay but I also like really like doing law and when I was deciding on what career path she was I chose engineering just because of my engineering but again I always thought though I want to become a lawyer and then I learned through a public speaker actually was a it was a career panel that's a patent lawyer I came to speak and he's like yeah I was an engineer and I went to law school then that's one like the little bald just like you know lit up I'm like oh I can be an engineer and go to law school which is something that I had never even heard of I am so after that I connected with the speaker he became a mentor of mine and he live he told me like you do you just need to study for the LSAT go to law school and then you're essentially a patent attorney I mean you have that technical background you have to you know pastor and exams but that's how you go about and practicing law and you know did making that jump was a little difficult just because I had been in my career for a few years and I was very comfortable I had great pay great benefits but I just didn't want to stay with that what if I was just like no I don't want to go my whole life thinking what if I would have pursued it and I just need to make the leap I was like you know what I'm going to do this you only live once this is what I truly want to do and looking back I have absolutely no regrets because I can still use my engineering technical background but I'm also using my legal education really cool how can someone who's interested in in your career get a head start in this field of work there is a public defender who was one of the panelists the study of law is there's a broad range of areas of practices that you can go into a m criminal or personal injury there's contracts there's white collar criminal defense there's patents or you know other intellectual property fields and really it's like you know if you have a certain interest in a specific law like of course you go in and you pursue that but more often than not and most attorneys that I've spoken to they end up doing a certain practice of law based on their first job or experiences that they learned throughout law school whereas me I guess I always knew I wanted to be a patent attorney because that's when I went to law school I went to law school school but when I started actually practicing while I started it sending a little bit I started doing trademarks trademark think about the Nike sign that's a brand that's also provides protection I've also started working with copyrights think about like the Harry Potter books that also enables sort of protection so it really expanded my my my my neck and I think one thing I would really tell students is like you know pursue what you want to pursue their also keep an open mind because you may think you want to do something and you might still end up doing it but welcome other opportunities because we know you might enjoy it more than more than you originally thought really cool thank you for sharing that now if I want to be a patent lawyer or I want to get into law I do now as a student with a during Middle School elementary high school to prepare in and pursue a career as such as yourself so for me I would say and I think I would share the same sentiment that the other panelist shared you don't do good in school of course. Don't limit yourself to one thing becoming well-rounded really does open a lot of opportunities for me I know my parents instilled in me in a very young age that vacation is very important so I always was very academically driven but I've come across folks who they told me you know I did well but I never felt that it was for me but I just really wanted to but I sorta really focusing on things that I enjoyed and you know if you do something that you really enjoy that inspires you and you end up me or pursuing it further and I would say if you want to pursue law you have to get a four-year degree an undergraduate program it can be anything it could be an engineering and could be music it could be literature for the loss of literally anybody can go to law school the only requirement is that you take the LSAT have a 4-year degree and an applied to law after you graduate you do have to take a State Bar wherever you want to practice so I took mine in California so I'm licensed to practice in California I have friends who are licensed to practice New York Colorado what have you thank you for that so what aspects of your work do you find the most fulfilling or exciting so for me I think so I I I work for a company my client is my company and I think for me find really rewarding at that business folks come to me and they're like a Deborah we need to protect this or we need to do this and for me I feel like I need to look at the law look at the facts and then provide an analysis so for me I mean Weiser but I'm also a business advisor and I feel I find it really rewarding that whatever I tell the business is actually going to contribute to the business long run and if there's never I guess there's no day that's the same we get your shoes from the left and right very different issues so for me it's just fun because it's like okay I have to be a problem solver these are the new issues this is what I have stood by depending on the law I find that the most fulfilling really sounds very interesting to typical day look like in your job so it's it's it's funny you say that for me I'm very much like a type-a individual I need to have my to do list I need to have okay that I need to meet this deadline I need to do this and sometimes I have it already I said sometimes I don't even get to my to do list because it literally is like you know on the fly like a CEO needs you hey the Chief Information officer need you hey we have this problem hey we have this problem hey somebody's infringing on intellectual property we have to you know tell him to stop it and it is just like all over the place but at the same time it's just like it's exciting I mean we're not firefighters going out to fight fires but we're lawyers trying to buy any of you no bad actors or trying to protect forget it's it's it's a thrilling exciting and and also you know that whatever you're doing it's it it has it's contributing to the bigger picture awesome thank you for that us students if you have any questions please drop them in the chat I want to know what questions you want to ask Miss sibella the first one Brianna thank you Brianna for a question what is your favorite part of your job my favorite part of the job I really like talking to people I like I like meeting you people and like I said I like learning and so my team consists of other Attorneys at my team consist of other Engineers of business folks and so it really is a teamwork setting like I do provide legal advice but I also for my team members like they contribute they they they pitch in and I think for me you know I come from a background of playing soccer it's a very very team sport and I mean one person can win the games like 10 other people on the field same thing with law like you do need that team support and you rely on them when you do need help and I think just brainstorming together and coming up with a solution is one of my favorite parts different for that paper that question let's hear a really good one here do you like your job I absolutely do love my job you know I wake up not feeling like I have to go to work I will wake up like oh I'm going to go to work and it's it's it's it's I'm getting paid for what I really like to do and again for me what I find so rewarding is just like I learn something new everyday and for me it's like everyday I'm learning the news I feel like oh I'm feeding my mind with something new and I also I feel like you know because of my background my unique background I also contribute ideas that may not be very common or may not be what other people think I also like pitching in my two cents excellent thank you let's see any other questions to dance did you see a couple in here how often do you get called not sure if I know what you mean by that Emily cause you know I do have a regular schedule that I'm in the office but I do have a work phone and if my boss calls me or if you know one of the chief's calls me I mean I do have to pick up the phone and see like a bike what was going on sometimes maybe in the weekend sometimes it could be during the holidays if it's something urgent I need you know duty calls you are on call then sometimes if it's the boss you got to pick up and you got to get on well. Very let's see what's the worst thing about your job figuring for that questions the worst thing about my job I guess with any profession right I mean I think there's dry but I think obviously in any career that can be stressed for me I think you know sometimes you know we provide advice and maybe the business is going to go otherwise or or maybe I think one way and probably think another way and we may not be no follow the path that I said and sometimes it can be difficult but at the same time you have to learn to like okay this is a team atmosphere and you know and sometimes the thing with law there's no just yes or no it can get very there's a gray area and sometimes it just pray stress or sometimes just like think overthinking but at the same time it's just like it comes with the job and it's not something that is not you know that's too bad yes plus two more questions didn't see Brianna are there special skills that are important to have in this field yes if you want to be a bad attorney I would say that you need a four-year degree and a technical background either it any sort of in physics even biology like that's really going to help you in order to help inventors because you know if if you don't have that technical background it would be very hard for you to actually advising the technology so that say that that would be one of the things to to to really consider alright thank you what's one last question what advice do you have for shy kids yeah you know where it's at so I'm an extrovert I love talking to people but I can't be a bit shy but you know that I'm just saying like you know I know many folks who would identify as introvert or shy but they're really great speaking with other people that you would never suspect I just what I would advise to shine the vigils is like you know if it's something that you really wanted to like with practice practice makes perfect just put yourself in those situations where you're practicing to be an outspoken where you're practicing to meet other in and when you're packing practicing to put yourself in situations that you normally wouldn't do the more you do it the more comfortable you become resemble me I'm an extrovert I love meeting people about the public speaking I I dreaded it all through High School call Ed law school is just like oh my God it would be looking at me like what if I say something incorrectly What If I Stumble and to this day I think public speaking is not something that I am really good at but I put myself in a situation to get me practice and I just I'm just going to say it does get easier and eventually becomes second nature that's very true thank you so much for that any last words of advice you could give to her students who sometimes are not motivated or need inspiration and again it's going to Echo with along the lines with what the other great speakers have said but it's just really just determination and hard work I'm a first-generation college student my parents immigrated from Mexico I'm the first person in my family to go to college let alone law school I think I broke a lot of ceilings I had to navigate College pass by myself I had to figure out or what do I need to get into to it soon. it's cool what do I need to go to law school so for me it was just like always asking the right questions knocking on doors and not being afraid to you know get rejected as Tanner was saying you know he explained how he had gotten a lot of rejection sticker play me I think people look at me and they're like oh you're so successful you're so smart but they you know they don't know my journey and I Gotta Buy was rejected so many times I got many knows I didn't get an offer for my dream job like it was things that really made me fall but I just got up I learned a lesson and it's just something that I really want students to remember like if it's truly something that you want and you really work hard at anything is possible like I know that sounds cheesy in it and like a cliche but it really is and you don't necessarily have to be the smartest person in the room I certainly wasn't the smartest student in the classroom I would just say that I was always very hard-working and I just didn't let that deter me suggest you do whatever it is that you like what love don't be afraid to follow and if you do fall get rejected it's just part of the journey awesome thank you so much for that I miss a betta and for your inspiring words for students we want them to stay motivated and continue on to goals so I thank you so much for being here today remove on with today's assembly thanks again for taking the time to talk to all her students and I will keep in touch right.
